Troubleshooting
I can't connect
- Check the address and port in Edit. Ports must be between 1 and 65535.
Could not connect: Connection refusedmeans nothing is listening on that port. The MUD may be down, or the port may be wrong.- A connect that never answers gives up after 20 seconds. Check your network.
- If the MUD needs TLS, turn on Use TLS and use its TLS port. See TLS.
The connection keeps dropping
Veilrunner doesn't reconnect by itself unless you ask it to. Turn on Settings › Connection › Reconnect automatically when the connection drops to retry up to 3 times. Your scrollback and map position stay when a link drops.
"certificate changed" when connecting with TLS
The MUD's self-signed certificate isn't the one Veilrunner pinned the first time. Check with the MUD that it really changed its certificate. If it did, type #tls trust, then connect again.
My password isn't sent automatically
Veilrunner sends the saved password only after the MUD asks for it, within 10 seconds. If the MUD's prompt doesn't hide your typing and doesn't contain "password", type the password yourself. Make sure the password is saved in Edit for that character. Passwords are not included in backups, so after a restore on a new Mac, enter them again.
Text looks garbled, or accented letters are wrong
Try Settings › Display and Text › Character encoding › Latin-1 for older MUDs. Lines already on screen don't change; new text uses the setting.
Colors are hard to read
Choose a different Color theme (for example High Contrast), change individual ANSI colors, or choose Force my colors.
Lines wrap in the wrong place
Set Settings › Wrap width. Auto wraps at the window edge. A fixed width of 80 to 160 columns is also sent to the MUD on connect.
A trigger isn't firing
- Check that its switch is on in Script › Triggers. Imported triggers may have come in turned off on purpose.
- Patterns are literal text unless regex is turned on for that trigger.
- Triggers match only the first 4,096 characters of a line.
"Trigger safety", "loop guard" or "Send cap" warnings
A safety limit stopped a runaway trigger or alias. Click the warning to open the trigger or alias that caused it. See #help safety in the app.
Long #N repeats are slow
More than 20 repeats are paced so the MUD's flood guard doesn't disconnect you. Change the pacing in Settings › Pace long #N repeats, or use #repeat stop to cancel.
Veilrunner asks me to choose a folder or file
Veilrunner runs in the App Sandbox and can only open files and folders you choose. This happens when you start a log, or when #import, #map export or #map import is given no path or a path it can't reach. Pick the file or folder in the panel. Nothing is lost.
The map is locked
In the Mac App Store version, the map is the optional Map — Early Access purchase. If you already bought it, choose Veilrunner › Restore Purchases while signed in with the same Apple Account. Your maps were only hidden while the map was locked, never deleted.
Map room names look wrong
Type #map relabel to fix misread names right away. Each room also fixes itself the next time you visit it. #map undo reverts the change. See Map — Early Access.
A speedwalk stopped
A walk stops on a failure message such as "You can't go that way", after 8 seconds without arriving, or when you arrive somewhere off the route. #speedwalk resume continues to the same room from where you are.
VoiceOver is too chatty, or too quiet
Use #speak off, #speak on or #speak auto, or the switches in Settings › Accessibility. Plain speech (#speak plain on) skips ANSI art and divider lines.
Still stuck?
