Connections, tabs & characters

Characters and saved MUDs

A character has:

  • a name
  • a MUD (address and port)
  • an optional password
  • its own aliases, triggers, buttons, variables, lists, chat patterns and command history

Saved MUDs, characters and Keychain passwords are shared by every tab.

  • + in the connection bar adds a character. Edit changes the selected one.
  • The password is saved in the macOS Keychain only. It is never stored in a profile file, export, backup or log.

Connect and disconnect

  • Connect (⌘↩, or World › Connect) opens the link for the selected character. Disconnect (⌘D) closes it.
  • Auto-login. After you connect, Veilrunner sends the character name. It then waits up to 10 seconds for the MUD to ask for the password. It treats the MUD hiding your typing, or a prompt that contains "password", as the request. Only then does it send the saved password. If no prompt comes, one line prints and you type the password yourself.
  • Password typing. When the MUD hides your input, the command line becomes a password field. Nothing is echoed, saved to history or logged. If a saved password appears inside a MUD line, it is shown as ••••.

If the MUD closes the connection, the network drops or a connect times out, the tab goes to Disconnected:

  • The button reads Connect.
  • The connection bar reads Disconnected · <MUD>.
  • Logging stops.
  • One line prints.

Your scrollback and your map position stay. Click Connect when you're ready.

Reconnect automatically is in Settings and is off by default. When it's on, a dropped link retries up to 3 times, after 2, 5 and then 10 seconds. It never retries after your own Disconnect. While it retries, the tab shows Reconnecting… (n/3) with Cancel.

Other timeouts:

  • A link that goes silent is noticed after about 90 seconds.
  • A connect that never answers gives up after 20 seconds.

Tabs

Each tab is its own session, with its own connection, scrollback, character, delays and tickers.

  • New Tab is ⌘T, or Add Tab in the tab bar.
  • Close Tab is ⌘W, the × on a tab, or right-click › Close Tab. At least one tab always stays open.
  • Switching tabs never disconnects the others.
  • A tab you are not looking at turns light green when new MUD text arrives.

Remembered tabs

When you quit, Veilrunner saves your open character tabs. The next launch reopens them as Disconnected, with their names showing. They don't connect by themselves.

Connect All

Connect All is to the left of Add Tab. It connects every tab that has a character and isn't already connected.

Examples

⌘T, pick a character, ⌘↩ new tab, then connect
Connect All reconnect every remembered tab after launch
⌘D disconnect this tab only
Settings › Reconnect automatically opt-in retries after a drop
#help connect the full connect page in the app
#help tabs the tabs page in the app
