MCCP compression
Many MUDs can compress the text they send using MCCP2 (telnet option 86, also called COMPRESS2). When the MUD offers it, Veilrunner agrees. It unpacks the compressed stream before colors, triggers, logging and the map see the text, so nothing else changes for you.
- Text usually shrinks to a fifth of its size or less. That helps on slow or metered connections.
- It works the same over TLS.
- If the MUD ends compression, Veilrunner goes back to plain text by itself.
- If compressed data arrives damaged, Veilrunner prints one line, asks the MUD to stop compressing and stays connected. A reconnect always starts fresh.
Turning it on or off
Settings › Connection › Use MCCP compression when the MUD offers it is on by default. #mccp on and #mccp off change the same setting from the command line. Either way, the change applies from the next connect.
Commands
#mccp the setting, whether this connection is compressed, and how much it saved
#mccp off turn compression off from the next connect
#mccp on turn it back on (the default)
#compress same as #mccp
Example output: This connection: compressed (412.6 KB received as 71.3 KB — 5.8:1, 83% saved).
Triggers can't run #mccp.
